A Note From Fred Rogers

Dear Friend,

Over the years, we've tried to use television to help young children grow in healthy ways. The goals of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and other programs we've produced are to help children feel good about who they are, appreciate others, find healthy ways to deal with their feelings and concerns, and learn about the world around them. Since those are some of your goals, too, we have always thought of ourselves as partners with the child-care community.

Of course, what appears on the television screen is just the beginning. We all know that children learn best when a caring adult is by their side responding to their concerns and questions and helping to make the messages meaningful in their daily experience.

Since children like to play about the things they see and hear, any activities which you suggest or which they come up with spontaneously can help them better understand what we've presented on the screen. We hope the discussion and activity ideas in this booklet will assist you in finding ways of your own to expand on the themes of the video -- ways that match your everyday lives and the needs of the children in your care.

We of Family Communications are glad to be partners with you in your important work for children and their families.

Fred Rogers

P.S. Some day, way down the road, you'll see or hear about one of your present children doing something extra special for somebody else. What a good feeling it will be to realize that you had a part -- early on -- in that person's becoming a caring man or woman.
