THE NEIGHBORHOOD ARCHIVE - All Things Mister Rogers

45 Years Since Fred Rogers' Senate Testimony

It was 45 years ago today that Fred Rogers appeared before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Communication to express the importance of quality children's television.

This effort to support PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting has become a defining moment in the decades-long career of Fred Rogers.

The passion and authenticity shown by Fred on that day were enough to secure funding for PBS and enough to give goosebumps to the gruff committee chairman, Senator John Pastore.

Fred Rogers said that day that he was grateful for the senator's goosebumps. Today, more than four decades of PBS later, I'm grateful for Fred Rogers.
